Flirting With Vegan

(FYI – this was a post I did for my last website before I became vegan)

So, I’ve been flirting with the idea of being vegan for a long time now, and after researching yesterday’s post I’m once again in a place where I’m seriously considering it.

Honestly, it seems like a lot of work. In my heart it’s something I want to do, but I still don’t know if I’m up for the challenge.

Perhaps I could just try it, but not 100%. For instance, if I’m at a restaurant I would eat cake made with eggs, or when I’m out to lunch I would still eat a sandwich where the bread is made with dairy products. But at home, I could eliminate it.

Perhaps I could pick Vegan days. Maybe Monday, Wednesday and Friday would be vegan. I need to come up with a creative way to gradually work it in so it doesn’t seem so daunting.

I’m not worried about my nutritional needs being met.  First of all, I rarely eat meat as it is, so not much would change, and I already take a B Complex vitamin with B 12. Because B 12 is only found in animal products, many vegans and vegetarians choose to take a B 12 supplement.

Basically, it’s just the dairy that seems difficult to part with. I’m starting my hunt for the best egg and cheese substitute.

The first place I will look is Alicia Silverstone’s book, ‘The Kind Diet.’ She has a lot of great recipes and tips for Vegans in her book, and she’s an inspiration.

Here is a video clip of Alicia talking about some of the benefits of a vegan diet.

I’m not ready to make the full-on plunge yet, so you will continue to see recipes on this site with meat and dairy, but maybe one day I will make the switch.

Please leave comments on your experiences with being vegan, suggestions on making the switch or flirting with the idea.
